Two Easy Ways to Clean Toyota Brake Rotors DIY

When the brake rotors in your Toyota vehicle go bad, replacing them can get expensive, and fast. That is, the average cost can run anywhere from $300 to $400, and that's just to start with. Drive an SUV like Toyota RAV4, for instance, and sure, you might stay closer to $400 on average, but if you drive a truck like Toyota Tacoma, you might be looking at $480 or so.

There's a great way to avoid that repair bill: by helping the rotors last as long as they can. On the one hand, that means inspecting them regularly, but on the other, it means keeping them clean -- of both dirt and grime kicked up from the road and of dust from friction with the brake pads. Do that, and you'll cut the chance of rust and reduce overall wear and tear.

What You'll Need

As methods go, you've got two options.

Option 1: Soap and Water Wash

This method's pretty self-explanatory. First, mix the soap and water in the bucket -- nothing too concentrated -- and then:

1. Hoist your Toyota up on the lift or jack and take the wheels off.
2. Add some soapy water to the spray bottle.
3. Coat the rotors with the solution (and cover the brake calipers with it while you're at it).
4. Use the wet cloth to wipe the rotors off; then, use the dry cloth to wipe off any excess.
5. Replace your vehicle's wheels and lower it.

Option 2: White Vinegar Soak

First, fill the bucket up with vinegar, and then:

1. Lift your Toyota up on a hoist, and remove the wheels.
2. Take the calipers and rotors apart.
3. Soak both in the vinegar for an hour (the mix might start to bubble -- this is normal).
4. Take the parts out of the vinegar and wipe them all off with the dry cloth.
5. Replace them, then replace your vehicle's wheels and lower it.
